How Long Can a Baby Survive Outside the Womb

The baby girl weighed less than a pound when she was built-in just 21 weeks into Courtney Stensrud's pregnancy. Infants that tiny and undeveloped aren't expected to survive exterior the womb, but her mother insisted that she exist resuscitated.

Her doctors believe the Texas girl is the nearly premature surviving baby ever reported. Her case means they can no longer say death is certain for babies delivered at 21 weeks' gestation, "though information technology remains highly likely," wrote Dr. Kaashif Ahmad, a MEDNAX-affiliated neonatologist at the Pediatrix Medical Group of San Antonio, Texas, final year in the journal Pediatrics.

"I experience blest that we were given this petty phenomenon baby," Stensrud told TODAY when Lyla'due south story first went public in 2017.

When TODAY caught up with her on Thanksgiving Eve 2018, she had a lot to be thankful for. Stensrud has started a blog to tell her daughter'due south story and attain other families who may be going through a like state of affairs.

Stensrud, now 36, and Ahmad commencement met in the delivery room of a San Antonio hospital minutes later on Stensrud gave nascency. Stensrud needed to brand a fast determination almost her daughter's fate.

'They work miracles'

"Every bit he was basically telling me in that location was nothing they could do, I said, 'Will you endeavor?'" Stensrud said.

Afterward doctors clamped the infant's umbilical cord, he placed her under an overhead warmer to raise her torso temperature and placed a breathing tube into her airway.

"From that point, she gradually responded. She turned pink. Within a few minutes, she began to make efforts to breathe and and so she began to motility," he recalled.

Lyla was whisked to the neonatal intensive care unit and spent almost four months in the hospital. She finally came home iii days earlier her original due engagement in Nov 2014.

Today, she's "she's happy, full of free energy and full of life" and keeps correct up with her 5-year-onetime brother, Stensrud said.

"The reason I'm doing these interviews — it'southward not for me, it's not for my daughter. It'due south for that mother in antepartum who is frantically searching online — that she will have a little flake of promise and organized religion that she tin can have the same event," she said.
